Three popular wrestlers from the Savannah Region of Ghana have been selected to represent the country at the 13th edition of the All African Games, which will be hosted by Ghana from 8th to 23rd March 2024.

The wrestlers are Dawuni, Jini and Shark, who are part of the Shea Wrestlers of Ghana, an organization that aims to revive and promote the ancient Gonja wrestling competition called ‘Kibrimasi’.

The Shea Wrestlers of Ghana was launched in 2022 by the Shea Wrestling and Event Ghana, an organization of young men who are passionate about preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage, tourism potential, investment opportunities in Gonjaland. The group organizes wrestling tournaments across the five northern regions of Ghana, Savannah, Northern, North East, Upper East, and Upper West.

The winners of each regional tournament compete in the grand finale at the Gonjaland Youth Association Congress Congresses.

The group also features traditional music and dance activities that celebrate the shea tree, which is a symbol of life and prosperity for the Gonja people.

The three wrestlers from the Savannah Region, Dawuni, Jini and Shark, have proven their skills and strength in the regional and national tournaments, and have earned the opportunity to represent Ghana at the continental level. They have been camping with the Ghanaian team in Cape Coast, preparing for the tournament that will start on the 8th of March at various sports facilities in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

The All African Games are multi-disciplinary sports events for AU Member States held every four years, one year before the Olympic Games. The games will feature 23 competitive sporting disciplines, including wrestling, which will be one of the qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The games will also be a platform for showcasing the rich and diverse culture of the African continent.

The three wrestlers from the Savannah Region are confident and hopeful that they will make their region and country proud at the All African Games.
