The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bole-Bamboi Constituency and Chairman of the Savannah MP’s caucus Alhaji Yusif Sulemana has advised memebers of the National Association of Gonjaland Students, University of Ghana branch students of the University of Ghana branch to have faith in privilege persons from Gonjaland and eschew the notion that “Gonjas don’t help fellow Gonjas”.
He added that such a prejudiced mindset is ill informed and must not be allowed to continue to fester.
The MP made this observation at the association’s general meeting and mentorship forum on campus on 11th December 2023.
The MP mentioned that the students should not see money as the only support because thay have alway donw their best to help people to get National Service, postings, jobs such at Banks, in Civil Service and Security agencies such as Police, Army, Immigration, Service and others.
Alhaji Yusif recounted some of the instances where Gonjas or persons from Gonjaland including the former President John Dramani Mahama have supported him to reach where he is today.
He mentioned how a Gonja man assisted him to do his national service in a certain Bank and subsequently getting employed in the same bank.
He also shared with the students an interesting experience he had some time ago when he attended a Dagomba students association programme at the university of education, Wineba. According to him, the Dagombas were full of praise for Gonjas because of their generosity towards their fellow Gonjas; a trait they felt was absent within the Dagombas.
He added; “the fact that you decide to pay the fees of a degree student leaving that of a masters degree student doesn’t mean you don’t help. It’s called the use of discretion”.
The Bole MP also encouraged the students to take their studies seriously and donated GHc1,000 to the association and another GHc 1,000 to students from his constituency.
