20 Assemblymen of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have petitioned the Savannah Regional Electoral Commission and other stakeholders not to accept Assemblymen selected from the District to be part of the electoral college that will vote in the Council of State elections tomorrow Friday 12th February, 2021.

The petition signed by the 20 Assemblymen titled; “Petition to reject any list of delegates for the election of Member of Council of State from the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly, Submitted by the Hon District Chief Executive- 8th February, 2021” stated that the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Sawla-Tuna-Kalb Mr Lawal Tamimu acted in contradiction to Article 89(2c) of the 1992 constitution where Assembly members from each District are to meet and nominate two of their members to form the regional electoral college.

The Assemblymen said the behaviour of the DCE shows that he has submitted names of his favourites oblivious to Article 89(2c ) of the 1992 constitution and hence urged the Electoral Commission not to accept any list of delegates from the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District for the elections because due process was not followed.

“We therefore want to state clearly that we Hon members of the above mentioned Assembly have not selected any person of group of persons to represent the Assembly for the election of the Council of state and if any list happen to reach your outfit for the above purpose, it must please be disregarded” the petition of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assemblymen stated.

Meanwhile Bole based Nkilgi FM spoke to the Assemblyman for Tuna West Electoral area of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Mr Hudu Adams and he disclosed that some Assemblymen took it upon themselves and met the DCE for an unofficial discussion on the issue but he has so far not been responsive to their concern hence the petition.

Mr Hudu Adams said called on the Electoral Commission to do the right thing by rejecting anyone claiming to have been selected to represent the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly for the election of the Council of state.

“PETITION TO REJECT ANY LIST OF DELEGATES FOR THE ELECTION OF MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL OF STATE FROM THE SAWLA-TUNA-KALBA DISTRICT ASSEMBLY SUBMITTED BY THE HON DISTRICT CHIEF EXECUTIVE- 8TH FEBRUARY, 2021

We the undersigned Assembly members in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District wish to draw your attention to the letter that was sent directing the Assembly to elect and submit names of delegates to form the electoral college to elect a member of the Council of state, that the due process has not been followed.

Regrettably all efforts to get the DCE allow Hon members meet to elect the delegates as dictated by a Constitutional provision proved futile.

The days to the exercise are getting closer and the DCE is not yielding to our demand to get the process followed. Indirectly his behaviour indicates he the DCE he has submitted names of his favourites oblivious of 89 (2c) of the 1992 constitution.

We therefore want to state clearly that we Hon members of the above mentioned Assembly have not selected any person of group of persons to represent the Assembly for the election of the Council of state and if any list happen to reach your outfit for the above purpose, it must please be disregarded.
