The Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional area Buipewura Abudulai Jinapor (II) has said that there is fear and danger ahead over the new Voters’ Register and that he associates himself with the caution of the National House of Chiefs to the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana not to disenfranchised any qualified Ghanaian from registering to vote.

The Buipewura who is also the Vice- President of the Gonja Traditional Council National House of Chief said the National House of Chiefs of which he is a member has indeed expressed concerned about the growing tension in the country over the compilation of a new voter register and that the body of Chiefs also expressed worry over war threats being issued by some political elements over a new register.

The Buipewura made these comments at his Palace in Buipe in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region on 6th June, 2020 after he was briefed and petitioned by an amalgamation of political parties, civil society groups in the Savannah region with the identity “Savannah First”.

The “Savannah First” group entreated the Gonja Traditional Council to halt the new voters registration process in the Savannah region as many will stand disenfranchised and that their call partly comes on the back of a letter issued by the National house of Chiefs dated 31st May, 2020 signed by Togbe Afede XIV and Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII cautioning the electoral commission on its failure to hold broader consultation on the matter of the new voter’s register and further directing that under no circumstance should any qualified voter be left out of the process.

The Vice- President of the Gonja Traditional Council Buipewura Jinapor (II) in his concluding remarks said what gladdens his heart is that the issue of the New voters’ register is at the Supreme Court of Ghana and that everyone should pray the court which he has trust in comes up with the best decision.
