The Savannah Regional Minister Mr Saeed Muhazu Jibril has appealed to an end to all security issues and the need for a lasting solution to security concerns, including chieftaincy and land disputes, ethnic clashes, and the influx of immigrants from Burkina Faso, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and commitment to overcoming these challenges.
Addressing participants at the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council’s first meeting for the year, held on 22nd August, 2024, which brought together representatives from the various districts, departments, and traditional authorities to discuss pressing issues affecting the region, the minister appealed to the participants to help find lasting solutions to issues of security bothering the region.
Mr Muhazu Jibril in his remarks, commended the government of the day for providing the Savannah Region with equipment under the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP). He expressed his commitment to ensuring the effective utilization of these resources.
The Savannah Regional Minister reiterated his commitment to leading with dedication and ensuring that efforts are directed towards creating a prosperous and harmonious region. He emphasized the need for continued collaboration with development partners and NGOs to address the region’s developmental challenges.
The Seven Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region, in presenting their reports on their respective districts’ performance for the year 2023 highlighted a common thread among their presentations which was the concern for security and difficulty in revenue mobilization as many districts face challenges in collecting property rents, with some individuals refusing to pay.
The DCE for Bole Madam Veronica Alele Herming in an address indicated that the 17 flash point has so far been identified in the Bole district prior to election 2024.
She also mentioned the killings of innocent people of Bole by unknown assailants as a major threat to the people of Bole.
On revenue, she indicated that much efforts needs to be put in place to raise revenue for the district.
Meanwhile, the DCE for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Mr Jacob Dumakawe has also in his presentation spoke on security issues in the district ranging from chieftaincy to other issues.
The Agriculture Department, Department of Feeder Roads , the Regional Education Department and the Regional Peace Council in their presentations also highlighted lack of budgetery allocation as a major factor that hinders their work.
The Paramaount Chief of the Kpembe Traditional Area of Gonja, Kpembewura Ndefoso Banbange (IV), representing traditional authorities, urged departments to sensitize citizens on the concept of property rates.
He believes that understanding the purpose of land and property rates will encourage citizens to pay, as “no one will pay for what they don’t understand.”
