The Chief of Lukula in the North Gonja District Lukula-wura Haruna Mahama has accused the Vice- President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of being behind the Gonja Mamprusi conflict in the Wasipe Traditional Area of Gonja or North Gonja District of the Savannah Region .

Speaking on 9th August, 2024, when over over 500 Lukula residents held a mini durbar to call for urgent intervention from government as well as the King and Overlord of Gonja and the Kings and Overlords of Gonja and Mamprugu to end the conflict in the area, Lukulawura Haruna accused Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of empowering one of his close Aides called Aminu with weapons which he also channel to Hafisu, Datia, Nobila, Nasiru, Bipoli and Shaibu Kalabule who is a former Assemblyman of the area to course trouble in Lukula and it’s surrounding communities.

The Chief of Lukula alleged that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s weapons are being used by some Mamprusis to kill and terrorise the people of the Lukula area.

The Lukulawura said the Paramount Chief of the Wasipe Traditional Area, Wasipewura Anyame Kabasagya (I) and his sub- Chiefs are seeking for peace and not war and mentioned that Lukula has always been a Gonja community and will continue to be, even though it is predominantly inhabited by Mamprusis.

Lukulawura Haruna said Gonjas have been Chiefs of the Community for centuries and mentioned Lukulawura Bakari as the first Chief of the Community, followed by Lukuluwura Sulemana, Lukulawura Mahama and Lukulawura Sumani.

Lukulawura Haruna Mahama said Lukula Sumani was driven away by Mamprusis after threats of killing him and so for many years there was no Gonja Chief at Lukula until he was enskined as Lukuwura by the Paramount Chief of the Wasipe Traditional Area.

The Lukula Chief said he is presently residing in Lukula and waiting for he and his people to be killed adding “but that won’t be easy because Gonjas are well prepared for any eventuality”.

A Resident of Lukula who is Mamprusi said they feel protected by Gonjas because they always come for peace and to protect them.

He said Gonjas are “always coming here to protect us because they are for the land”.

The Resident of Lukula said our brothers (Mamprusis), they are always coming here to be killing people”.

He added that the people of the community know those who always come to course trouble.

He also said “they are our Mamprusi brothers but we are appealing to government to stop them from coming here to be killing us”.

The Resident added that anytime Gonjas are around the trouble coursers run away and only prepare and come back when they know Gonjas are not in the community.

He said; “we are pleading with the Paramount Chief of the Wasipe Traditional Area and the King and Overlord of Gonja as well as the King and Overlord of Mamprugu to come to our aid by ensuring the conflict end since we simply want to live in peace to farm and feed to fees our families and live happily without constant fear” .

The King and Overlord of Gonja Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I) recently visited the King and Overlord of Mamprugu Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga and high on the table during close door discussions and public speeches was on how to collectively end the Gonja- Mamprusi conflict at the Lukula area in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

The King of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I) and the Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, King of the Mamprugu kingdom, have pledged their resolve to bringing finality to the over a decade boundary dispute between the two kingdoms at Lukula and Mempeasem in the Northern Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I) in his speech stated; “The boundary dispute between the two kingdoms has always ben a sensitive issue, but it is through dialogue and cooperation that we can find lasting solutions.”

He added;
“Our goal is to resolve any disputes amicably, ensuring that the interests of our people are upheld, and that peace prevails. Through mutual respect and understanding, we will work towards agreements that honor the historical claims and current realities of both Yagbon and Mamprugu”.

The Kings of Gonja and Mamprugu urged their kinsmen to prove to the world that the two kingdoms are peaceful.

According to them, the two kingdoms have the responsibility of protecting the dignity and respect of their two illustrious sons contesting as presidential candidates in the 2024 elections.
