The Sawla-Fulfulso road especially the Sawla to Damongo portion in recent times is known for its poor condition. It is characterized by potholes, dust, and erosion, making travel challenging, especially during rainy seasons. The Bamboi to Wa road has similar problems and there have been calls for the government to repair and maintain the roads to improve transportation, trade, and economic activities in the area.

The
Information Officer for the
Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Mr Takora Iddrisu Benjamin has therefore called for the problems of the Wa to Bamboi and Sawla- Fufulso Highways to be tackled.

In a write up he said the Wa to Bamboi and Sawla to Fulfulso highways are lifelines connecting rural communities to urban centers in Northern Ghana but they have become notorious for their treacherous conditions.

Mr Takora Iddisah added that: “Crumbling asphalt, gaping potholes, and exposed manholes threaten the safety of travelers, traders, and pedestrians alike”.

He further said; “For drivers like Abdul, who frequently ply the Wa to Bamboi route, the journey has become a serious experience.

According to him he spoke to the driver called Abdul and he said; “You can’t predict what will happen next – a pothole, a manhole, or even a head-on collision, so we are just praying to reach our destinations alive, shaking his head”.

The Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Information Officer Mr Takora Iddrisu Benjamin also said; “Pedestrians and vendors, like Aisha, who sells goods by the roadside near Fulfulso, face equal risks.

He disclosed that he spoke to Aisha the Vendor and she also said; “Cars swerve to avoid potholes, and sometimes they hit..we are just trying to survive, but the roads are making it impossible.”

He said the statistics are very serious disclosimg that in the past year, over 50 accidents have occurred on these highways, resulting in 20 fatalities and countless injuries.

Mr Takora Iddrisu Benjamin added that; “Local authorities attribute the carnage to inadequate funding, poor maintenance, and the increasing number of vehicles on the roads”.

He said; “As the rainy season approaches, the situation is expected to worsen, with flooding and erosion further compromising the roads’ integrity. Commuters, traders, and residents are bracing themselves for the worst”.
