The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bole-Bamboi Constituency and Ranking Member of the Trade, Industry and Tourism committee of parliament Hon Alhaji Yusif Sulemana has disclosed that, commercial
Lithium deposits have been discovered within the Bole enclave.
Speaking on Citi Tv’s Big Issues on 9th December, 2023 and monitored by Bole based Nkilgi Fm, the Bole MP said, it is not only in Mfantsiman, Sunyani, and Cape Coast that that there are deposits of Lithium adding; “Luckily enough Lithium deposits have also been discovered in my constituency (Bole- Bamboi) in the Savannah region and Wa in the Upper West region”.
He advised the government to take steps to put up the right mechanisms in place by having a master plan on Ghana’s mineral Resources in terms of how the country can make maximum benefits out of its abundant Mineral resources.
The Bole MP said; “one will have thought having this amount of lithium deposits the country, government will invest in the exploration of the lithium to have the bigger share, so that when people begin to invest they can’t push just any amount that they wan , I hope that when it comes to parliament, we will all push through to get a better deal”
Alhaji Yusif Sulemana raised some mining contract concerns that happened some time ago in 2016 when a company called EXxon Cubic was given a concession to mine but the company was stopped by the authorities in that community and this issue was taken to court in 2017 because the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources at that time Hon Amewu had written to revoke the licence of the company, but EXxon Cubic won in court.
He narrated that, the state had to appeal before the case was taken out of court.
He further added that; ” two of my colleagues, the MP for Tamale North constituency, Hon. Alhassan Suhiyini and Hon. Ernest Henry Norgbey. MP for Ashaiman constituency, Greater Accra on the basis of the judgement on EXxon Cubic’s case went to court that they breached Article 268 because their permit wasn’t rectified by parliament. We know there are so many companies mining in this country without parliamentary rectification, so they went to court and they had listed about 35 company’s mining breaching this consumer requirement and as I talk to you the courts are yet to call the matter, we are hoping that the right thing is done”
Hon. Alhaji Yusif Sulemana assured the good people of Ghana that, now that lithium has been found in large quantities with other minerals, when the NDC comes to power in 2025 they will make sure that all the mining companies use the right channels by going through parliament.
He said; “we will make sure that there is no back door dealings to the detriment of Ghanaians, we will enforce the Supreme court ruling and every mining company contract must come to parliament for rectification”
