The Minister of the Savannah Region Mr Saeed Muhazu Jibril has cautioned that whoever that will destabilize the peace of the Savannah Regional capital of Damongo after the pronouncement of the rightful Paramount Chief on 16th February, 2023 by the Judicial Committee of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs to be aware of the change in his or her sleeping place afterwards.
Speaking at the 3rd Day Funeral of the late King and Overlord of Gonja last Friday 10th February, 2023, he said; “I wish to say that the Judicial Committee of the Savanna Regional House of Chiefs will give their verdict on the Damongo Chieftaincy controversy on 16th February, 2023 and I wish to caution that whoever that is aggrieved of any pronouncement should go to court..
He said; “we members of the Savannah Region Security Council have sworn an oath to maintain peace and to protect lives and property in the region and so we will not tolerate any any act that will destabilize Damongo..and anyone that will put the law into his or her own hands will not sleep in Damongo”.
The Savannah Regional disclosed that the Security Council of the region have written letters to the rival claimants to the Damongo skin not to step foot at the Jakpa Palace in Damongo during the funerals and processes for the enskinment of a new King and Overlord of Gonja.
Tension mounted in the Savannah Regional capital, Damongo, following an invitation extended to one of the claimants to the Damomgo skin Chief Yakubu Imoro by the Gonja Traditional Council to its emergency council meeting on Tuesday, 24th January, 2023 in Damongo.
The faction that opposes him petitioned the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to intervene and block Chief Imoro from honoring the invitation of the Traditional Council to a meeting.
The petitioners, Chief Kelly Seidu who is also one of the claimants to the Damongo skin, and the Kuntunre Clan of Damongo who enskinned Mr Kelly are challenging the legitimacy of Chief Yakubu Imoro as Damongowura.
They said the case is before the Judicial Committee in the Savannah Region for fair mediation, thus the reason why he should not be allowed to attend the meeting.
In 2016, the late Chief of Damongo, Jakpa Lermu Tunrumba Boresa I, passed on, leaving a vacant skin. His siblings from the second gate, Yakubu Imoro and Kelly Seidu emerged as interested parties to the skin.
The Kuntunre Clan of Damongo enskinned Chief Kelly Seidu as Chief of Damongo but the decision was contested by Chief Yakubu Imoro, who subsequently petitioned the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa (I).
The Gonja King later gave his judgement and enskined Chief Yakubu Imoro as Chief of Damongo, a decision Chief Kelly Seidu also rejected and went before the Northern Regional House of Chiefs for mediation.
The case has since been transferred to the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs following the demarcation of the new regions.
After seven years, the house scheduled Thursday 26th January, 2023 for judgement but the Savannah Regional Security Council postponed judgement of the case to 16th February, 2023 based on Security reasons.
