The Paramount chief of the Buipe Traditional area of Gonja, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor (II) has appealed to the government to convert Damongo Senior High School in the Savannah Region to University.
Buipewura Jinapor who is the Vice President of the Savannah Regional House of chiefs made the appeal in Damongo during the 50th Anniversary celebration of the school on Saturday 27th November, 2021.
In an address as the special guest honour, the Buipewura said the Damongo Senior High School in the last 50 years has produced renowned educationists, lawyers, impactful politicians, surveyors, with about 52 past students of the school being coordinating directors out of the 216 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) in Ghana.
He said the Damongo Senior she has also turned out agriculturalists, Engineers, Justices, Journalists,
medical doctors, vocational and technical experts as well as PhD. holders in the likes of Dr. Ahmed Jinapor, Dr Clifford Braimah, Dr Soale Buah and so on who have contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of mother Ghana.
Buipewura Jinapor added that the past students of the
School has set unbreakable academic records in many universities in Ghana thereby setting the standards high confirming the theme “50 years of academic excellence: celebrating the past and igniting our future in a challenging environment”.
Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor (I) has donated 100 bags of cement for the construction of the wall and a cash amount of GHc10,000 to support the anniversary with former Independent Candidate in the Damongo Constituency Mr David Tiki Dange also donating 200 bags of cement.
Headmistress of the Damongo Senior High School (SHS), Madam Mercy Ewuntomah Aluguba in a speech blamed the poor performance recorded in the school in recent times on school placement system that involves the placing of students with bad results into the school and brighter students not selecting the school because of the perennial water problem in the school.
She also mentioned indiscipline on the part of students who sneak into town under the cover of searching for water which can best be solved by completing the school fence wall.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Damongo Constituency and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor addressing the large crowd gathered commended the school for bringing up prominent personalities in Ghana.
He pledged a cash amount of GHc50,000 to help in the completion of the school fence wall and also pleaded to acquire a brand new school bus for the school.
On the issue of water, the MP also assured the school of measures he is putting in place even before the Damongo water project is completed to salvage the school from the water crisis.
He used the opportunity to advise the students to study very hard using himself as an example who studied under a lantern and wrote his BECE exam inside the Damongo Senior High School dining hall.
Still onthe anniversary, the 1984, 1998 year group of the school and the old students of the school (DASSOSA) have handed over 3 mechanised boreholes to school.
Alhaji Shaibu Adam, National President of the Old students Association of Damongo Senior High School thanked the 1994, 1998 year groups and DASSOSA for the support and called on all year group groups to come onboard to help reduce the water situation of the school.
He charged authorities to use the water for the purpose to allowing the students to have much time for their studies.
The Headmistress of the, Madam Mercy Ewutomah Aluba thanked the old students for their efforts in helping to reduce the water situation in the school and promised that, the boreholes will be put into good use.
