Private Borehole and Tanker operators in the Savannah Regional capital of Damongo and it’s surrounding communities are up in arms against the management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) that had contracted them to supply water free of charge to residents of Damongo and its surrounding communities for a period of three months during the lock down period as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the private borehole and Tankwr operators, the highest paid among them received a sum of GHc1,000 with many of them receiving as low as GHc3 000 which according to them can not pay even their electricity bills.
Mr Seidu N. Abubakari who speaks for the over thirty private borehole ans Tanker operators said management of the GWCL spoke to them very well and assured them of paying them even better than what they charge for a drum of water.
He said he and his colleagues are very disappointed in the management of the GWCL and feels very cheated in the amount they are receiving from them.
He added that the cost of power alone they bought to ensure the constant flow of water during the 3 months period is more than what they were receiving from the management of GWCL.
He therefore on behalf of his colleagues appealed to the government to make sure what is due them is given to them since it will affect them greatly especially in buying power to ensure water keeps flowing for residence in the municipality, adding that prepaid meters is what they use to ran the water business which uses a minimum of GHc100 in a day.
President Akufo-Addo in April this year announced the provision of potable water for free to all Ghanaians for the months of April, May and June to make up for lost income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The water subsidies, according to the Finance Minister was to make sure the ordinary Ghanaian continues to enjoy free electricity and water while government works to end the pandemic.
