A two-week ultimatum has been issued by the concerned citizens of Damongo, under the auspices of the NPP in the Damongo constituency, to the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company and the ruling NDC government, to ensure that water supply is restored to the Damongo township, following the completion of the GH₵ 17,074,113.58 Damongo Alternative Water Supply System project, also known as the ‘Broto Water Project’, a few days into the 2024 election.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Secretary for the Damongo constituency Mr Kadri Abdul- Rahman expressed deep frustration during a press conference held on Tuesday, 10th June 2025, in Damongo, over what the group described as a “deliberate refusal” to operationalize the water facility.
The project, which began exactly a year ago on June 10, 2024, was initiated by the NPP government through the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, and financed with a loan from EXIM Bank. The construction, undertaken by Dannak Engineering under the supervision of the Ghana Water Company Litd (GWCL), was completed in December 2024 at a reported cost of GH₵ 17,074,113.58.
Mr Abdul-Rahaman lamented that;
“This historic edifice, which cost taxpayers over GH₵ 17 million, sits idle while the people of Damongo continue to suffer from chronic water shortages”.
He added that;
“It is unacceptable. The continued inaction is not only a waste of national resources but also a betrayal of the people’s trust.”
The NPP in Damongo did not mince words in criticizing former MP and current Managing Director, Hon. Adams Mutawakilu (Garlus), accusing him of sabotaging the project due to political bias.
They referred to past comments by Hon. Garlus, who purportedly belittled the project as “a well water” during the election campaign season.
“If it is simply a well, then commission it and deliver us the better option you promised”; the NPP Secretary for Damongo taunted
On the Damongo weekly market, Mr Abdul- Rahman said it is a big sabotage to see the commissioned market still not in use after several months of its completion.
He said the accidents that are being recorded especially on Saturdays is as the result of the congestion on the principal street of Damongo in the name of the weekly market.
He therefore charged authorities to operationalize the market as well since all that was needed for the take off of the market was done by the erstwhile NPP government.
On the recent Eidul- adha festival, the NPP constituency secretary for Damongo accused the NDC of deliberately hijacking all the animals killed by the Turkish organization for the poor and the needy.
He said the NDC after hijacking the carcasses also used the opportunity to sell the cows to butchers in the name of their party being in power.
