Two individuals from Nalerigu in the North East Region have been arrested by the Savannah Regional Police for allegedly attempting to defraud the Savannah Regional Minister, Mr Salisu Be-Awuribe, by impersonating the King and Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom, Nayiri Mahami Abdulai Sheriga.

According to Bole-based Nkilgi FM’s source, the suspects used a voice impersonation of the revered Nayiri during a phone call to solicit financial assistance from the minister. The two well dressed young men later traveled to Damongo to meet with the Savannah Regional minister in person, claiming that the Nayiri had requested support for their travel to Accra for an engagement.

The Savannah Regional Minister, whose direct grandfather was a King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom from 1990 to 1992 (Yagbonwura Iddi Jakpa Be-Awuribe) and who is known for his respect for traditional authorities accepted their request doled out money covering their expenses to Accra including accommodation.

However, suspicions arose when the duo returned to Damongo with a fabricated story, allegedly from the Nayiri, suggesting a ritual by the Nayiri to “fortify” the minister. This prompted the minister to involve security personnel, leading to their arrest.

Further investigations revealed that the two have been involved in similar fraudulent activities since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regime, successfully deceiving several government appointees and officials.

This incident underscores the importance of vigilance among public officials and the need for thorough verification of individuals claiming to represent traditional authorities.
