The Vice President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Buipe traditional area of Gonja, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor (II) has appealed to the King and Overlord of the Mamprugu Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga to use his consummate and revered office to call for immediate ceasefire to facilitate the easy process for the amicable mediation and final resolution of the Bawku chieftaincy conflict by His Majesty Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II King of the Asante Kingdom.
Buipewura Jinapor (II) made the appeal when he paid a courtesy call on the Nayiri at Nalerigu on 12th March, 2025, as part of his nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ to express gratitude to traditional leaders following his election as Vice President of the National House of Chiefs last year.
Buipewura Jinapor (II) further used the opportunity to also appeal to the Kusasis in Bawku to put down their weapons and come together for the settlement of the long protracted chieftaincy dispute which has retarded development in the area.
The revered Paramount Chief from Gonja Buipewura Jinapor (II) reminded the Mamprugu overlord that the relationship between Gonjas and the Mamprusis dates as far back as the 16th century. This, according to him was the time the ‘Nakpa Alliance’ was formed led by the legendary Kumpatia of Gonja and Naa Gbewaaa the founder of the Mamprusi Kingdom.
Buipewura Jinapor (II) indicated that the Pact resisted expansion of boundaries of other notable tribes, promoted peace, trade and cultural exchange, hence the people of Gonja and Mamprugu have since coordinated and improved on the social ties and friendliness.
He added that President John Dramani Mahama’s strategy to reset Ghana, with a focus on harnessing the economic opportunities in Northern Ghana, deserves full support.
The Vice-President of the National House of Chiefs emphasized that agricultural development remains a key investment area in the broader agenda of resetting Ghana.
The King and Overlord of Mamprugu Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga on his part assured the Buipewura that he will fully support the Asantehene in his effort to lead in bringing lasting peace to Bawku and further expressed satisfaction with the Vice President of the National House of Chiefs’ call for both sides to lay down their arms in the interest of peace.
