The Savannah Regional Peace Council held a two day workshop in Sawla and Tuna on Community Sensitization on Hate speech, Negative, Counter Narratives in Target communities of the Sawla- Tuna- Kalba district in Savannah Region on 5th December, 2023.
The Chairman of the Savannah Regional peace council Rev. Father Lazarus Annyere in his welcome address said the purpose of is strengthen the existing peace we are enjoying and also identify potential treat of conflicts within the Sawla Tuna Kalba district and Savannah Region at large.
Presentating Understanding hate speech, the boundary between hate speech and freedom of expression, root causes, forms and consequence of hate speech and counter narrative, indicators of hate speech, and activities to mitigate it effects. Rev Father Lazarus said that Savannah Region is under developed hence the need to unite and desist from things that has the tendency of of dividing us.
A beneficiary of the program and a member of the Savannah Regional Peace Council, Hajia Kansawurche Bukari Ajara in an interaction with Bole based Nkilgi fm outlined some comments, behaviors and actions that can trigger violence in the Savannah Region. She said the program is very timely and very beneficial to all.
Some participants shared practical experiences of hate speech, negative and counter narratives.
Six communities were selected for the program and they include Tuna, Kalba, Saru as a cluster for Tuna and Sawla, Nakwabi, Gbeniyiri as another cluster for the Sawla zone.
The program is funded by the Embassy of Denmark, The National Peace Council and UNDP. Participants were drown from the media, CSOs, Chieftancy institution, the Queen Mothers Association, the Clergy among others.
Participants were taken a presentation on Understanding and responding to conflict machanism and measures for peace and security in the Savannah Region.
