The new King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jawu Soale (I) has said that he that the 1930 Constitution of Gonja is out of date and no longer serves the needs of Gonjas and so
The speech of the Yagbonwura at his Outdooring on 21st March, 2023, read by his Spokesperson Benkrowura Seidu Saaka Bakari said; “I do believe that, most people in Gonjaland will agree with me that, the current constitution is out of date and no longer serves our needs”.
Yagbonwura said the current Gonja Constitution was adopted under the auspices of the British Colonial Administration in 1930. It has served us well for over 90 years now. However, I do believe that, most people in Gonjaland will agree with me that, the current constitution is out of date and no longer serves our needs:.
Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jawu Soale (I) added that “the objectives for which the constitution was set by the British Colonial Administration are completely different from our current political, economic, social and other dispensations”.
He added; “These, coupled with the numerous changes in the political economic, social, educational, and most importantly, legal dispensation drawn from the 1992 constitution of Ghana and the Chieftaincy Act and the various chieftaincy institutions established by law, requires a comprehensive review and codification of all chieftaincy and traditional matters of the Gonja Kingdom”.
The King and Overlord of Gonja further said; “I am in this respect assuring you and with the support of my cabinet and my Council, that, we will work assiduously to set up a Committee of expects to advice the Council on the best modalities and the setting up of a Constitution Review Committee to be inaugurated within a period of 6months”.
He said; “I will therefore require the support and commitment of all sons and daughters and all relevant stakeholders for this project”.
Already the Gonjaland Youth Association has expressed their willingness to support the Gonja Traditional Council towards a review of the Gonja Constitution.
At an emergency Central Committee Meeting of the Association on 30th December, 2022, the Association resolved that there the need for a review the 1930 Constitution of Gonja to reflect current and emerging trends in traditional and cultural governance in tandem with the national Constitution and chieftaincy Act.
